Who Is Black ECU?
Black ECU started in the summer of 2020 as a small group of alumni concerned about the lack of response by the university to address pervasive institutional inequities. We have since grown into a larger group from all over the United States, with a vast array of careers from the federal government, healthcare, tech industries, academia, and more.
Over the last year, we have witnessed intentional actions to directly address inequitable practices throughout our country in our workplaces, legislation, and in our communities. We would like for these intentional actions to be transparent and measurable at the university we love to call home, East Carolina. We don’t want to be left behind in this change. It is our hope that our voices will collectively work together with the university so that we can become change agents. Our goal is not only to hold the university accountable in identifying and communicating strategic, and intentional approaches that will aid in the recruitment, retention, and success of both black faculty and staff and students, but for that process to be transparent.
We invite you to join us to rally behind the university to become the impetus that will make East Carolina University a great place for everyone to learn and work!
Sincerely,
Black ECU
